DOHA (IQNA) – The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) denounced the oppression of Muslims and Islamophobic incidents in India, urging the international community to protect the Muslim community in the South Asian country.

Protest against anti-Muslim incidents in India

In a recent statement, IUMS Secretary General Ali al-Qaradaghi said the union vehemently condemns the policy of severe oppression, hatred, and the targeting of peaceful Muslim protesters, as well as the gross violation of freedoms and the enactment of racist laws by the Indian government against the Muslim minority.

“The Muslim ummah appeals to global leaders, influential individuals, and nations, including the United Nations and human rights organizations, to protect the Muslim minority in India, who face the imminent threats of expulsion and genocide. It urges them to take decisive action by imposing sanctions on the perpetrators responsible for these heinous human rights abuses,” he added.

According to Qaradaghi, the Union has been deeply saddened and outraged by the horrifying atrocities witnessed in the city of Junagadh, Gujarat, in northern India.

“Muslims were subjected to barbaric acts of torture, perpetrated in front of a mosque, as they were callously stripped while their anguished cries filled the air,” he said.

Earlier this week, a video was circulated online showing Muslims being flogged and assaulted by police in India’s Gujarat.

It is related to violent events on Friday when police attacked Muslims protesting the demolition of a mosque and an Islamic cemetery in the town of Junagadh.

In the video, two men, said to be policemen, are seen beating and flogging a group of Muslims in front of a mosque.

Qaradaghi said in the statement that the IUMS urgently implores the international community, particularly the United Nations, Arab and Islamic nations, to address these grave violations and racist practices.

“Immediate measures must be taken to halt all forms of racial discrimination and prejudice against Muslims and other marginalized citizens,” he added.

The union also called upon Muslims worldwide, including politicians, scholars, intellectuals, and individuals, to employ every legitimate means at their disposal to bring an end to the atrocities being committed against their fellow brethren in India.
